An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
